“Following Jesus… But Where Are We Even Going?”

A devotional for the spiritually curious

Okay, so a few days ago we talked about denying ourselves, about handing over the wheel and letting God lead for once. Maybe you were into it, maybe you’re still chewing on it. Either way, here’s a question that naturally follows:

“If I deny myself and follow Jesus… where is He taking me?”

Fair question. Because let’s be real: it’s hard to follow someone if you don’t trust where they’re going.

Analogy Time!

Imagine this:

You’re on a trail deep in the woods. It’s quiet, kinda foggy. You’re blindfolded (just go with it), and someone offers to lead you. You’ve never been there before, but they have. They’ve walked it a hundred times. They’ve even built some of the paths. You can’t see what’s ahead, but they can.

Now… do you trust them?

That’s what following Jesus feels like sometimes.

You don’t always know where He’s taking you, but you do get to know who He is. And the more you know Him, the more you realize… He’s trustworthy, even when the path is unclear.

What Jesus Actually Said About Following Him

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6

He doesn’t say:

“I’ll show you the way,”

He says:

“I AM the way.”

Following Jesus isn’t just about a destination—it’s about relationship.

It’s like… the journey is the point.

So Where Does Jesus Actually Lead?

He leads you to:

1. Truth

(even when it’s uncomfortable)

He gently exposes the lies you’ve believed, about yourself, about others, about what life is really about. He doesn’t shame you; He sets you free.

John 8:32 — “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

2. Healing

Not overnight. Not always in the way you expect. But over time, your wounds start to feel lighter. Bitterness starts to loosen its grip. Regret stops defining you.

3. Purpose

You stop asking “What’s the point of all this?” and start living with a sense of why you’re here, even if you’re still figuring it out.

4. Love—Real, Unshakable Love

Not performance-based, not temporary, not flaky. A love that sticks with you at your worst and lifts you at your best.

 A Heads-Up: It’s Not Always Easy

Let’s not sugarcoat it. Following Jesus might cost you some things:

  • Your pride
  • Your comfort
  • Certain habits
  • Some relationships that pull you away from who you’re becoming

But what you gain?

Peace. Freedom. Wholeness. Identity. A quiet kind of joy the world can’t give or take.

What If I Don’t Feel Anything Yet?

That’s okay. Faith isn’t a feeling, it’s a step. Then another step. Then another.

Some days it’s easy.

Some days it feels like walking through mud.

But every step taken with Him is shaping something in you, even when you don’t see it yet.

 Daily Practice: Try This Today

Before you scroll, snack, or stress, pause.

Say this out loud (or whisper it if you’re not ready for that yet):

“Jesus, I don’t fully know where You’re leading, but I want to trust You. Help me walk with You today.”

That’s it.

No church stage. No performance. Just one small step.

 Final Thought

Following Jesus doesn’t mean you suddenly become perfect, or life becomes easy.

It just means you’re not walking blind anymore.

It means you’ve got a Guide who loves you, knows you, and walks with you.

Even through fog.

Even on days you doubt.

Even when you trip.
